Introduction

Hip-Hop dance is a novel and exciting style of street dance that is commonly performed to hip-hop music. It is a vibrant form of dance that blends various freestyle movements to build a refined piece of art. Through its three main styles of popping, locking, and breaking, hip-hop dance has unfolded into one of the most famous and influential forms of dance.

Origin & History

Hip-hop dance in itself is a broad category that includes a mixed variety of styles. The more traditional dance styles conceived in the 1970s include uprock, breaking, and funk styles. Later, with the advancement of breaking, B-boy and B-girl came into existence. B-boy and b-girl stand for “break-boy” and “break-girl,” where b-boys and b-girls dance to the record’s break. Meanwhile, influenced by martial arts and gymnastics, breaking went from being a purely upright dance style top rock and becoming more floor-oriented.

With the advancement of Breaking, some other dance versions were also originating in the different parts of the world. One such is Funk style or Street style. Created in California, street style comprises a wide range of hip-hop dance forms, including roboting, hitting, locking, bustin’, popping, bopping, boogaloo, strutting, sac-ing, and dime-stopping. The most popular and widely performed styles of the funk styles are Locking and Popping. As breaking, locking and popping achieved popularity in the 1980s, hip-hop social dancing, also known as party dancing, started to develop. These many dances are the samples that have appeared since hip-hop developed into a distinguished dance style. Like hip-hop music, hip-hop social dancing proceeds to change as new songs are released, and new dances are created to follow them.

Types of Hip-Hop

There is a wide spectrum of dance forms that are officially considered as Hip-Hop dance styles. The very first of them is Breaking. It was created in the South Bronx, New York City, during the early 1970s. At the time of its origin, it was the only hip-hop dance style. Also, Afrika Bambaataa classified it as one of the five pillars of hip-hop culture. The five pillars also incorporate DJing, Rapping, Graffiti Writing, and Knowledge. Meanwhile, Puerto Ricans maintained its advancement and development when it was considered a fad in the late 1970s. Breaking includes four foundational dances: top rock, footwork-oriented steps performed while standing up; down rock, footwork achieved with both hands and feet on the floor. It also includes freezes, stylish poses done on your hands, and power moves, complex and impressive acrobatic moves.

Next comes Locking. It was originally called Campbellocking, created in 1969 in Los Angeles, California by Don “Campbellock” Campbell. The dance form particularly became popular with the efforts of his troupe, The Lockers. Locking looks quite the same as Popping, and the two are frequently confused by a casual observer. In locking, one holds their positions for long. The Lock is the base move used in locking. It is equal to a freeze or a sudden pause. Locking also has specific dance moves that distinguish it from popping and other funk styles. And to add some variety, Lockers commonly use a unique dress style characterized by colorful clothing with stripes and suspenders.

Another one is Popping. It was derived from the earlier Boogaloo street dance style taking place in Oakland, California in the late 1960s. This dance form includes techniques of soulful footwork steps, arm movements, stop-motion animation, the robot, & posing hard – which contract muscles during robotic poses to the music. Popping is based on the technique of suddenly tightening and easing muscles to cause a jerk in a performer’s body, referred to as a pop or a hit.Other than these there, there is a hip-hop box, which includes enormous other dance styles. Like, Krumping, Jerking, Turfing, Jooking and many more.
