Introduction

Contemporary dance is an expressive kind of dance that blends elements of several dance forms. That includes modern jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary dancers form a connection of the mind and the body through fluid and liquidicious dance movements. Contemporary dance focuses on versatility and improvisation, unlike the strict and structured nature of ballet. The dancers keep a severe eye on the floorwork and use gravity to pull them down to the floor. This dance form is often done bare feet and in a light, easy costume. Contemporary dance can be performed on many different styles of music, whether it be fast or slow.

Origin of Contemporary

The term “contemporary” is somewhat misleading: it describes a genre that developed during the mid-20th century and is still very popular today. It all started at the beginning of the 20th century when American dancer Isadora Duncan left the codified school of ballet to develop a more fluid and elegant form of dancing. She looked upon the ocean as the spirit of inspiration for her style of movement. Alongside sudden changes in rhythm, speed, and direction, contemporary dance style involves ballet’s strict legwork with modern dance’s torso and floorwork. There are many styles within the genre. Today, it is closely linked to rock and roll music, hip hop, electro, and jazz.

Contemporary dance has been influenced by eastern philosophies and applied ideas and values derived from Zen Buddhism and Indian Hatha Yoga to contemporary dance. One of the specialist paths taught in our Contemporary Dance style is the Release Technique. It is centered around breathing, skeletal alignment, muscle relaxation, joint articulation, and the grounding force of gravity working in tandem with momentum to allow swift and clean movement.

What We Teach?

Contemporary emphasize and focus on the technique, and combine the strong but controlled legwork of ballet with modern that stresses on torso. It also employs contract, release, floor work, fall and recovery, and improvisation characteristics of modern dance. Unkown changes in rhythm, agility, and direction are often used, as well. Additionally, contemporary dance sometimes comprises elements of non-western dance cultures, such as elements from African dance, including bent knees, or movements from the Japanese contemporary dance.

Benefits of Contemporary
