Introduction

Anybody of Indian origin or even International people knows what Bollywood Dance is. From Hritik Roshan’s Dhoom song to Madhuri Dixit’s legendary Ek Do Teen, there are a humungous number of dance numbers on which people can not just stop their legs to shake. Bollywood dance style is used in the Indian Movie culture. It is an ecstatic blend of belly-dancing, Kathak, Indian folk, modern jazz, and even Western erotic dancing. Moreover, the ambiance also plays a massive role in this dance form. The placement, costumes, music, and presence around are equally important as that of the dance itself.

Origin & History

The term Bollywood is formed by combining two names, Bombay (the Indian city now called Mumbai) and Hollywood. In earlier Bollywood films, the dancing style was based on Indian Classical Dance and Folk Dances from different parts of India. These dance forms included the classical art forms of Kathak and Bharata Natyam. However, Bollywood Dance began to turn in the 70s. The Cabaret style of dance became more mainstream & was executed in many movies. Later on, Cabaret was replaced by Disco, which was a global phenomenon at the time. However, with the continuous familiarity with western culture, various other dance forms added to the list.

Styles of Bollywood

Being a blend of a large number of dance styles, the dancer can pick any one of them to sway the way. Anyone interested in some traditional dance styles can opt for Classical dance, Kathak, or ever Bharat Natyam. In contrast, someone who is into a much more modern and western dance style can go with Freestyle, Hip-hop, modern jazz, and Belly-dancing. Moreover, the performer can also choose the dance style or music depending on the Bollywood actor or performer they like and what they do. Some great examples are Govinda style, Madhuri style, Disco, and the list go on.
